Retronauts Episode 789: Famicom Disk System Redux

A rubber-band-proof podcast

It's astonishing to consider that Nintendo, just three years after releasing the industry-defining Famicom, followed it up with a peripheral intended to replace it. Yet the move from cartridges to diskettes did not take (and never shipped in any other territories) making the Famicom Disk System but a blip in their history.

I said blip not flop because some of the greatest 8-bit video games of that era debuted on the Disk System so on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, host Jeremy Parish saw fit to dedicate a new episode to examining its legacy—the first such conversation since episode 359 five years ago. This time out, Jeremy welcomes back Hardcore Gaming 101's Kurt Kalata and Retronauts Patreon supporter Ben Hamilton. Consider this Side B to 2021's Side A!
